Hmn...maybe I should see the movie? In the play I didn't get a pedophelia vibe--but I felt the play was hardly focused on plot. It was more about staging, more about using your imagination to disbelieve your eyes. It was actually a bit overwrought in this way--but because I appreciated the attempt,I played along. To me, this play is less about what the production accomplishes rather than how willing you are to buy in. It's successful on an individual level. I don't even think it's possible to objectively label Coraline a massive success...which is why it's not the next Wicked!

For an organization that claims it's "the #1 multi-issue conservative organization in the nation," the Council of Conservative Citizens seems to be obsessed with a single issue (check out their website), and that issue is not "love thy neighbor as thyself."

Great post :)

When I saw the movie, I dismissed it as a not-particularly-subtle allegory for pedophelia. Was that true of the play? (They seem very different, and it sounds like the play is much more interesting).

I heard this story years ago from a writing professor in the States. He'd studied Australian poetry on a Fulbright Scholarship, and his interpretation was, if I recall, that as crushing a blow as Ern Malley was for Australian avant garde poetry, he was even more so a death knell for the poetic careers of Harold Stewart and James McAuley, who never after wrote anything as memorable as The Darkening Ecliptic. It seems that, as little attention as poetry gets, it's never quite justifiable for poets to denigrate one another. If we can manage to call some attention to ourselves, mightn't it be for something other than accusations of fraudulence?
